Particular standards apply to companies depending on the type of work being performed. For example, manufacturing operations would be covered by the General Industry Standards (29 CFR 1910), construction activities would be covered by the Construction Standards (29 CFR 1926), and agricultural work would be covered by the Agriculture Standards (29 CFR 1928). 29 CFR 1915, 1917 and 1918, deal with different Maritime Standards which here in TN are enforced by Federal OSHA. If employees of a company perform work that is covered by a regulation in the above mentioned standards, the company would have to ensure they are in compliance with that regulation. For example, if construction work is being performed and employees use ladders to accomplish the work, the employer would have to comply with the ladder regulations found at 29 CFR 1926.1050 through 1926.1060, applicable to ladders, and so on depending on the regulations applicable to the specific type of work being performed or equipment being used.
