The HiSET® exam is made up of 5 subtests: Language Arts – Reading, Language Arts – Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The five subtests vary from 65 – 120 minutes. The Language Art – Writing subtest is multiple choice with an essay prompt, while the remaining subtests are only multiple choice. The questions reflect College and Career Readiness Standards to ensure that you are prepared for employment and/or post-secondary education once you have earned your credential.
HiSET test takers may take each subtest a maximum of three (3) times in 6 months. The 6 month period is split into two 6 month periods each year.
First 6 month period: January 1 to June 30
Second 6 month period: July 1 to December 31st

In Tennessee, the HiSET® exam is offered to qualifying individuals over the age of 17 (unless granted an exception). To be eligible to take the test, individuals without a high school diploma should not be enrolled or be required to be enrolled in public high school under state law.
